The Western Australia government has announced the student assistant program 2025 editions for Western Australia families with school-aged children to help them cover the school expenses. The Cook government plans to roll out $89 million to cut the school cost for families.
According to the government notice, Western Australia eligible families can submit their application for the student assistant from 28 April 2025 till 04 July 2025. Last year, many families did not take advantage of this program due to unawareness; hence, this year, the government plans to hold awareness campaigns.
The program is initiated to provide financial relief to the parents or families with school-aged children (Kindergarten to Year 12) from the rising cost of living, as the assistant covers the basic school expenses, such as books, stationery items, uniforms, IT equipment, etc.

Eligibility Criteria
The Western Australian families who meet the following eligibility conditions can claim the WA Student Assistant Program:
- The students studying in a WA public school, a non-governmental school, or registered for home-schooling from Kindergarten to Year 12.
- Foreign students enrolled in a WA-registered school who pay the full tuition fee can apply for the program.
- The mature students who are studying to get the WACE Certificate (Western Australian Certificate of Education) can apply.
- The assistance will be available to the students receiving family-based care.
- Students who are attending Cocos Island District High School, Christmas Island District High School, and the School of Isolated and Distance Education can apply.
The authority will validate the student’s eligibility through their unique WA student number (WASN), which can be found easily on school reports, high school SmartRider cards, or through previous NAPLAN results.
Payout Amount
According to the Western Australia announcement, the package of $89 million will be used to provide cost-of-living relief to parents or guardians with school-aged children. The financial assistance under the program is decided based on the current education level of the students.
The Western Australian families can find out the cost-of-living payments under the Student Assistance Program below:
- For students from Kindergarten and primary school, the payout is $150.
- For students from secondary school, the payout is $250,
The financial assistance will put the money back into the pocket of families for the school expenses.
The government may provide additional support to the eligible families from regional areas to support them in accessing the payment via alternative claim methods and targeted campaigns for communities who may not have applied for last year’s student assistance program.

- You should get your child’s WASN (WA student Number) eight-digit number, which is also known as the Student number of SCSA. The parents or guardians can find the WASN in students’ reports, and if the child is from the Kindergarten or Pre-primary this year, the applicants can contact their school and get the number.
- The bank account details where you would like to receive the payment should be ready.
- You should gather the information on DOB, name, school, and education level of the child you are claiming the assistance for.
