The HB 112 bill has a tax rebate that comes out of Georgia’s revenue surplus for the taxpayers who meet the eligibility requirements. The government has been successful in bringing this additional refund for the third time for the Georgians.

With the bill becoming a law, Georgians can expect the additional tax refund in a few weeks if they have filed their tax returns already, or after weeks of filing their tax return. Since Georgia is one of the US states affected by the disasters, the deadline for the 2025 tax return is pushed forward to May 1, 2025.

Who will receive it?

If a person meets the following eligibility standards, they will be entitled to receive the upcoming excess tax refund in Georgia.:

  • You have to be a resident of Georgia, a past-year resident, or a temporary resident for tax purposes.
  • You must have filed your tax return for the 2023 and 2024 tax years; the deadline for the 2024 tax year is 01 May 2025, or with extension, 15 October 2025.
  • You should not be a dependent with $0 income on someone’s tax return;
  • Georgians with tax liability for the 2023 tax year, that is, you owe money before tax credits, withholding, and any other tax payments.

Refund Amount

The HB 112 provides the tax refund from the state revenue surplus to the eligible taxpayers based on their filing status and tax liability, such as:

  • Individuals and married people filing returns separately can expect the maximum refund of up to $250;
  • People with the head of household filing status can expect the maximum refund of up to $375;
  • Couples who have filed taxes jointly can expect a maximum surplus refund of up to $500.

The Revenue Department of the state will issue the surplus tax refund as per the regular refund process, depending on what you have selected in the tax return, that is, either a physical check or direct deposit.

Payment Expectation

The Revenue Department of Georgia will process the additional Surplus tax refund under HB 112 after you file your current year tax return before the deadline. The Georgians who have already filed their tax returns can expect the surplus tax refund in a few weeks via direct deposit or physical check.

The taxpayers can expect their tax refund in the same time frame as they receive the tax refund after filing their tax returns. For instance, the majority of refunds are sent out three weeks after returns are e-filed, or ninety days via physical checks. However, if the taxpayers filed the 2024 tax year tax returns by the deadline of 01 May 2025, they can expect their refund in six to eight weeks due to the rush days during the deadline.
