The defendant, Thomas Reuters, has agreed to pay $27.5 million to resolve the settlement and compensate the class members. With final approval granted, the settlement administrator can begin the payout distribution in 90 or 180 days, depending on the number of claims and other processing.

So, the class members waiting for the compensation from the clear privacy settlement can expect the payout in mid-2025. As per the administrator’s estimates, the claimants can receive up to $48 in compensation from the settlement. However, if someone appeals against the court’s decision, the payout distribution can be halted till it’s resolved.

Payout Amount

The Clear privacy settlement fund of $27.5 million will be divided to pay for the cost approved by the Court, such as attorney’s fees (25% of settlement fund, $6875,000) attorney’s court (not more than $700,000), settlement administration cost, (not more than $485,000), the service awards ($10,000 for each), and compensate the class members.

Once the settlement administrator deducts the above costs and expenses, the remaining funds will be used to compensate the claimants with a valid claim. The administrator will equally divide the remaining funds to provide equal compensation to the class members. The payout will depend on the number of claims and remaining funds, which will be known after the distribution.

However, the Clear Privacy settlement administrator estimates that class members with valid claims can expect a payout range of $19 and $48. If, after the distribution, any money is left in the fund, the rest of it will be donated to court-approved organizations.

What’s the lawsuit about?

The lawsuit against Thomas Reuters was filed in December 2020 on behalf of all former and current California residents claiming the defendant has shared or sold their information through their product CLEAR, violating their privacy. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants sold the sensitive information of the residents for their benefit.

The plaintiff claims that the defendant has violated the resident’s privacy without asking for the resident’s consent. The defendant has denied all the wrongdoing alleged against them and proposes to settle the lawsuit with a settlement fund of $27.5 million. This lawsuit sends a message to companies violating consumer privacy and sheds light on transparency and consent.
