Payout Amount
Meta has paid $90 million in order to settle the class action lawsuit against Facebook for internet tracking. The administrator of the settlement has first used the fund to manage the expenses, such as service rewards for the class representative who brought the case, attorney expenses and fees, settlement administration notice costs, and other expenses.
After the above expenses deduction, the settlement administrator has started the distribution of the compensation from the net settlement fund to the approved claimants. The settlement administrator has not revealed the payout for each person as it depends on many factors, such as several class members, the net settlement fund, and others.
However, many users who got the payout after the distribution began on 10 April 2025 shared that they have received the payout of $40.67. The settlement agreement says, the class members with valid claims will receive equal payment, so the claimants can expect a payout of $40.67 if they are still waiting for the payout.
Who will receive it?
The compensation for the Internet tracking settlement will go to the class members who submitted their claims before the last date, September 22, 2022. Here are the eligibility conditions for the FB tracking settlement class members:
- The United States Facebook users who visited any non-Facebook site that has a Like button displayed on the platform between class period, April 22, 2010, and September 26, 2011, are the class members.
Exception:
- The employees, officers, agents, directors, successors, affiliates, parents, subsidiaries, and legal representatives of Meta are ineligible for the settlement.
- The judicial officers or the judge related to this lawsuit and their immediate family members cannot receive the settlement.
- The lead legal counsel and their agents, representatives, assigns, directors, employees, subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, and others are ineligible.
- The settlement administrator and any of its agents, subsidiaries, affiliates, successors, predecessors, employees, agents, representatives, or officers are ineligible.
- The settlement class members who chose to object or exclude themselves from the settlement by filing the form by the last date will be ineligible for the payout.
Cause of the lawsuit
The lawsuit against the defendant, Facebook, was filed in 2022 in the Northern District court of California, alleging that the defendant is collecting or storing the user’s data without their consent when they visit other websites with the Like icon from Facebook.
This way, the defendant has violated the user’s privacy and tracks their internet footprints to share the data with third-party apps and gain some revenue. According to the plaintiffs, the defendants can track their browsing history through social plug-ins and cookies even when the users log out from the Facebook platform.
As per the class action, the tracking occurred during the class period, and the defendant collected the user’s data. Meta denied any wrongdoing and unlawful activities and decided to resolve the case with the settlement of $90 million.
