Siri Lopez Voice Settlement
The lawsuit was filed against Apple in 2019, claiming the defendant has recorded the former or current user’s conversations without their consent when they communicated with Siri-enabled devices, such as Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, MacBook, iPod touch, iMac, iPod touch, or Apple TV etc. and gave the third parties access to their personal data.
The personal information was recorded when the Siri-enabled devices were activated unintentionally. The plaintiffs claimed that the defendant had violated the consumer protection and privacy laws, and sharing the information was an unlawful activity.
Apple has admitted any wrongdoing, but they have proposed to settle the lawsuit with a $95 million fund to provide compensation to the people whose private communications were recorded. Up to five Siri-enabled gadgets may be claimed by individuals to receive settlement funds.
Who can claim?
The US resident must meet the following eligibility conditions of the Lorez Voice Assistant settlement to claim the compensation:
- Those who currently or previously owned a Siri-enabled device and lived in the United States or one of its states or territories, and whose private communications or information are being recorded or shared with the parties, are eligible to receive the settlement.
- The class members have been the current or former purchasers or owners of the Siri-enabled device during the class period, 17 September 2014, and 31 December 2024, and have experienced their information being shared or recorded when Siri was activated unintentionally.
Exclusion:
- The Apple directors, officers, employees, or any entity with a controlling interest in Apple, Apple legal representatives, heirs, and other related entities will be excluded from the settlement.
- The judicial staff or judges related to the Lorez Voice Assistant lawsuit or their immediate family members will be excluded.
Settlement Payout
The class members of the Lopez Voice assistant settlement will receive the payout from the net settlement fund, which is the remaining fund after the administrator deducts the taxes, administration costs, legal fees and costs, litigation expenses, and service rewards.
The administrator has not estimated the final amount for the class members, as it will depend on the number of claims, net settlement fund, etc. The administrator has said the payment will be divided proportionally among the class members, where the class payment is capped at $20 per Siri-enabled device.
The final amount would be estimated by the Lopez Voice Assistant settlement administrator after the claim submission is final and approval is granted by the federal court. The payout amount can increase or decrease after the final distribution depending on various factors, and the payout will be processed via physical check, automated clearing house, or electronic devices.
