The Ontario provincial government offers the Ontario Energy and Property tax credit to counterbalance the property and energy tax that residents pay and provide some financial relief to them. The credit mainly supports the lower-to-middle-income earner with a monthly payment.
The OEPTC payments are part of the Ontario Trillium benefit that has two other credits as well, NOEC and OSTC. The three credits are paid jointly with the OTB payments based on the credits residents qualified for.
The Ontario residents who wish to receive the OEPTC with OTB in 2025 must file their income tax and benefit return for the 2024 tax year before the tax deadline, 30 April 2025. Under the OEPTC benefit, Ontarians can expect a payout up to $1461 based on the component they qualify for and their family situation.

How much?
The Canada Revenue Agency processes the OTB, and the OEPTC payout amount depends on many factors, such as age, marital status, rent paid, the property tax paid, shelter costs paid, energy costs, and where you lived during the year.
Based on credit guidelines, the credit amount can vary from one beneficiary to another, however, the maximum payment for the 2025 OEPTC is defined as:
- For non-seniors (age 18 to 64 years old), the energy component is $285 with a $998 property tax component, which totals to $1238.
- For the senior recipients (age 65 or older), the OEPTC payout will be around $1461, where $1176 is the property tax component and $285 is the energy combined.
Ontarians who wish to calculate their final payment from the OEPTC benefits can check the factors, and the payment they receive from OTB depends on the number of credits they qualify for and their family situation.
How to apply?
Ontarians who wish to take advantage of the OEPTC credit can apply for 2025 with their tax returns for the 2024 tax year. The eligible residents can follow the steps below and claim the OEPTC credit:
- You must check your eligibility for the OEPTC, and if you find yourself eligible, gather documents you will need to support your claim.
- With the tax return, you must fill out the Form ON-BEN, which is an application form for the OTB and Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant for 2025.
- You can file your 2024 tax return and attach the credit form with the Ontario tax package, make sure you tick the 61020 box in the form, and complete all three parts of the form.
- You must provide the information related to your paid rent/ energy cost/ property tax/ and others for your main residence, or other living situations like college, private school residence, etc.
- Once you enter all the information relevant for the OEPTC claim, also check if you are eligible for the other two credits in OTB and claim accordingly to get the credit for the sales tax you paid for the energy or property tax.
When can you expect?
The CRA processes the OEPTC in the combined form with other credits through the OTB payout to the eligible Ontarians on the 10th of each month. The payment is the same for each month, that is, 10th, unless it’s a bank holiday or weekend on the respective pay day.
For instance, the upcoming payment of the OTB for May 2025 will be made on 09 May 2025, whereas all other months of 2025 payments will be made on the 10th day of the month, except August, due to the weekend.
Ontarians now have 12 days left to claim the OEPTC benefit with their tax return for the financial year July 2025 to June 2026, so immediately complete your claim process and continue receiving the benefit.
