Supplemental Security Income (SSI) supports Americans with disabilities and adults who have little or no income or resources to cover their expenses. The Social Security Administration processes the SSI benefit to eligible Americans every month.
As per the SSA payment rules, the SSI payments process on the first day of each month to the account of recipients; however, the payment date may change if it falls on a weekend or a federal public holiday. Due to this reason, sometimes the recipients receive double payment in a month.
This year, SSI recipients will first time receive the double SSI checks in the payment month of May 2025. The double payment means the recipients receive the two months’ payment in the same month, so they never get confused with more payout, hence spend it wisely to manage their finances.

Double Payment
The Social Security Administration processes the SSI payment on the first day of every month to ensure the recipients have the money in their hands to cover their expenses for the month on time. In May 2025, the recipients will receive two payments because the first day of June is falling on a Sunday.
So, the SSI recipients should mark their next payment dates for the May and June payments below:
- 01 May 2025 (for May 2025)
- 30 May 2025 (for June 2025)
Who will receive it?
The Social Security Administration has set the following eligibility conditions for the Supplemental Security Income benefit:
- The adult and children get the SSI benefits when they have no or little resources or income, or they are suffering from disability or blindness, as it limits their capability to earn.
- The elderly aged 65 or older don’t need to have a disability to get the SSI; they just need to meet the income and resources criteria.
- People who are age 64 or younger must have a disability or blindness that may result in death, or affects their ability to work for 12 months or more, or limits their daily activity.
- Individuals should not earn more than $2019 a month from their work, the income limit may increase for couples or parents who apply for the benefit for their children. The younger clan or people aged below 64 should earn less than $1550 a month from work.
- The resource limit (such as vehicles, money in bank accounts, etc.) for individuals is $2000 and $3000 for couples. If the parents are applying for their children with disabilities, their resource limit is $2000.
- The US non-citizens may also qualify for the SSI benefit if they meet the above criteria and meet the non-citizen eligibility set for SSI.
Benefit Amount
According to the 2025 COLA adjustment of 2.5%, the 2025 Social Security benefits have increased from January 2025. The SSI recipients will receive the following monthly payments as per the adjustment:
- Individuals can receive the maximum payout of $967
- Couples can receive the maximum payout of $1450.
The SSI monthly payments depend on many factors, hence it may be reduced depending on your living situation, income, and circumstances. According to the SSI guidelines, your SSI payment may be affected in the following ways due to several factors:
- Income: If you earn $2 more than the income limit, your SSI payment will be reduced by one dollar for every $2 earned. If your income comes from non-work resources, such as unemployment benefits, pensions, and others, for every dollar above the limit, your SSI payout decreases by $1. The children who live with their parents and their parents’ income may affect the benefit payout.
- If you live with others and don’t pay your share of food, shelter costs, your SSI payout can be decreased to $342.33 a month.
Reporting responsibilities
The SSI recipients need to report their income, living situation, and other information each month to continue receiving the payout. Here’s what the recipients should report to the authority; otherwise, their payment may get affected:
- You should report your monthly income and other resources by the tenth day of the month after the change to the SSA through the mobile app or call at +1800-772-1213.
- You should report the change in your living situation and resources, like living in a hospital or someone else’s house, etc., to the authority through the SSA mobile app or by calling the SSA service number, or you can visit the nearby local SSA office.
The SSI benefit supports many people living in the US and helps them lead a decent life when they have little or no income and resources; hence, if you are a recipient, get ready to receive a double payment next month.
